Yummy Bookmarks


As part of my social networking experience I created an account with Delicious, which is a social bookmarking site. I had heard of Delicious in the past but never quite knew exactly what it was. I did some searching and came across a video located on the Common Craft Website entitled ‘Social Bookmarking in Plain English’ which explains social bookmarking and details very simply how to use Delicious.

Within minutes I had already decided that I was definitely going to continue using Delicious for personal use. It is simple to use, and allowed me to create tags so that I could order my bookmarks into similar categories. It is great that you can place a link on the bookmark bar of the browser to add and share sites on Delicious, because it enables fast and easy sharing of bookmarks.


From the perspective of an information organisation, I think there would be advantages to using Delicious internally amongst staff as a way of providing access to useful bookmarks in the one location, as opposed to everyone having to save favourites onto their own computers, which does not allow you to access them if you are at another workstation. Delicious also allows information professionals to share useful websites that they use on a regular basis, which could even help to streamline processes if all staff are aware about a great resource and can make use of it.


In terms of using Delicious to enhance learning and support information services, it could be useful if libraries encourage their users to add them to their network and then the library can bookmark updated webpages such as events held within the library or great new resources, that way clients who want to be kept up to date with information can see the websites that the library recommends. In terms of getting the information out to patrons and keeping people informed, twitter is a faster method of informing people, however posts could get missed. Therefore promoting information via delicious is an alternative way to reach users.
