After reading through the A-Z list at the Social Networking Librarian Website I picked out 5 letters from the list that I felt could be applied to my library to help embrace a library 2.0 ethos. Firstly:
Blog –
I think a library blog can be a great way of providing current information to users in a dynamic website, which can allow people the opportunity to contribute feedback and ask questions. A blog can be more informal than the library website and can be a place the library can suggest books, post updates, and share ideas.
Content –
It is important when adopting social-networking tools that the content is interesting and useful, otherwise it will go unread. Library’s should definitely keep this in mind and ensure that they don’t adopt social media technologies simply because it is a trend, and instead only adopt the tools that will be valuable for the library and its users.
Help –
I think this point about requiring all the library staff to help with building the library’s social-networking presence is important. Because not only does it give staff the opportunity to learn how to use different social media tools, it also keeps them in the loop, through responding to users comments.
Podcasting-
I think this is a great technology that can support accessibility to information by providing it in audio format, such as tutorials, interviews, and library tips. This can be helpful for students who can’t physically visit the library and who require alternative ways of accessing library information
Text Messaging –
I feel that text messaging could be a useful service provided by the library, especially due to the continual rise in people owning a mobile phone. The library could notify users of when their holds are in and when their books are due via text messaging, which would be a quick method of contacting users.
